The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, His Eminence Dr Ahmed Al Tayyeb, visited Singapore from 3 to 5 May 2018 at the invitation of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
His Eminence called on President Halimah Yacob and was hosted to separate meals by Prime Minister Lee and Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean. During these engagements, both sides reaffirmed the longstanding cooperation between Al-Azhar and Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS) on religious education for the Muslim community in Singapore. The importance of promoting interfaith dialogue and understanding, and ways to further deepen cooperation in countering extremism were also discussed.
His Eminence delivered the MUIS Lecture 2018 on “The Unifying Force of Religion” on 4 May 2018. Besides engaging with local scholars and Al-Azhar alumni, His Eminence also had an inter-faith dialogue with religious and community leaders over lunch separately.
