Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam made an official visit to Cuba from 22 to 24 June 2015.

In Havana, Minister Shanmugam called on Vice President and Minister of Economy & Planning Marino Murillo Jorge, and Minister of Foreign Trade & Investment Rodrigo Malmierca Diaz.  Minister Shanmugam had the second round of Singapore-Cuba bilateral political consultations with Minister of Foreign Affairs Bruno Rodriguez Parilla, and was also hosted to lunch by Minister Rodriguez.  In addition, Minister Shanmugam visited the Port of Mariel, managed by a wholly-owned subsidiary of PSA International.

In Santiago de Cuba, Minister met with Speaker of the Provincial People’s Power Assembly and Head of the Provincial Government Reinaldo Garcia Zapata.

In his meetings with Cuban leaders, Minister Shanmugam reaffirmed the excellent state of relations between Singapore and Cuba, and the good cooperation between both sides.  Minister Shanmugam had a useful exchange of views with his counterparts on ways to strengthen and deepen bilateral cooperation.

Minister Shanmugam welcomed the interest of the Government of Cuba to establish a resident Embassy in Singapore.  This would be a milestone in bilateral relations and will facilitate greater cooperation between Singapore and Cuba.

Minister Shanmugam also signed a bilateral Visa Abolition Agreement with Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs Bruno Rodriguez Parilla.  Upon its ratification, the agreement will ease travel between Singapore and Cuba, and encourage more trade and people-to-people links between our countries.
