The Vietnam – Singapore Training Centre (VSTC) hosted a training course on English for Business Communications in ASEAN from 3 June to 7 June 2013 in Hanoi. The course, which was conducted by Ms Bina Bhattacharyya, Senior Lecturer, Centre for TransCultural Studies, Temasek Polytechnic, is sponsored by the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the framework of the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI).
2 The training course aims to equip participants with English language skills (e.g. grammar, sentence structure) to carry out effective business communications in ASEAN. It also aims to train the participants in exercising cross-cultural sensitivity when communicating with their international counterparts. The course covered topics such as the nature of business communication, audience-centered approaches, inter-cultural awareness, the use of plain English, and the application of these concepts both in written and spoken business communications.
3 The course was attended by 30 government officials from various ministries such as Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Ministry of Information and Communications. Officials from Hai Phong and Thanh Hoa also participated in the course.
